“'Trump
2028' merchandise now available for purchase at the Trump Organization’s official
online store.”
With the debut of a new clothing line
carrying the tagline "Trump 2028," the Trump Organization restored
curiosity in and optimism about Donald Trump's political future. You can now
buy the company's signature red hats and T-shirts on their website.
New Merchandise Features "Rewrite the
Rules" Slogan
The $50
high-profile red hats include the words "Trump 2028" embroidered in
bright white on the front. The product description claims that the hat, which
has a traditional snapback design, exhorts fans to "Rewrite the rules with
the Trump 2028 high crown hat."
For $36, Trump supporters who want to show their support and hope for his
political movement may purchase t-shirts with the same forward-thinking motto,
"Rewrite the Rules."
White House Responds: “Cool Hat, Highly Popular”
In
reply to questions about the fresh gear, White House press secretary Karoline
Leavitt said, "It's a cool hat and I believe it will be highly
popular," but she also referred reporters to the Trump Organization.
Eric Trump, the former president's son and an executive in charge at the Trump
Organization, posted a picture of himself wearing the new hat on social media,
but the organization did not issue a statement. In order to support the ongoing
gossip, he also shared screenshots of inquiries from the press on the product.
Hints at 2028 Campaign Stir Speculation
Although
the U.S. Constitution restricts presidents to two terms, the new goods launch
coincides with increasing speculation about a potential Trump 2028 campaign.
Trump was openly asked if he would seek a third term during a recent phone
interview with NBC News.
He answered, "A lot of people want me to do it." He did not refute
the proposal, although he did add that "it's very early in the
administration." Rather, he said, "I'm not kidding," leaving the
door open. However, it is much too early to consider it.
"There are methods that you could do it," he added, hinting that
there might be ways to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, though no concrete plans
were disclosed.
Republicans Downplay Talk of a Third Term
Republican
leaders in Congress are dismissing the proposal in spite of the merchandise and
Trump's remarks. Trump could not lawfully seek a third term "without a
change in the Constitution," according to Senate Majority Leader John
Thune. Thune said that Trump is "probably messing" with reporters,
implying that he may simply be making fun of them.
Trump's supporters aren't completely silent on the matter, though. Rep. Andy
Ogles (R-TN) proposed a constitutional amendment in January, just after Trump
took office, that would permit a president to serve three terms, so long as the
first two weren't consecutive. Nevertheless, the idea is unlikely to succeed
because it would need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states in the
United States and approved by two-thirds of Congress.
A Message or Marketing?
Whether
the Trump 2028 merchandise is a calculated marketing move or a serious
political clue, it's doing what Trump has always done best: creating buzz,
igniting debate, and uniting his supporters.
