Shortly
after Liverpool's football league victory parade on Sunday, a car crashed into
a group of people walking, leading to the arrest of a 53-year-old man on
charges of attempted murder.
The celebrations had just ended when the horrifying incident occurred on
Water Street in the heart of Liverpool. According to authorities, more than
fifty people were hurt when the car crashed into a crowded location. While the
majority of the casualties have now been released from the hospitals where
emergency personnel took them, 11 are still there in stable condition.
Police Investigating Motive; Driver Followed Ambulance Into
Restricted Area
The
suspect, a white British guy from West Derby, is being detained on suspicion of
attempted murder, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of drugs,
according to Merseyside Police.
The driver appeared to have entered the prohibited area by following an
ambulance that was attending to a different medical emergency, Assistant Chief
Constable Jenny Sims told reporters. According to the police, the suspect's car
inadvertently crossed the parade zone when the barriers were briefly lifted to
make room for the ambulance.
According to authorities, no other people are being searched for the
attack, and the event is not yet being regarded as a terrorist act.

a quick response to the news, Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the actions in
Liverpool "appalling" in a social media statement. He added, "My
thoughts are with all those injured or affected," urging the public to
give police space to conduct a thorough investigation and complimenting
emergency personnel for their prompt reaction.
According to the Premier League, "Everyone at the Premier League was
shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt
thoughts go out to all those injured and affected." The group was in touch
with Liverpool FC to extend their assistance.

family and I are shocked and devastated," wrote former Liverpool manager
Jürgen Klopp in an emotional Instagram post. All those hurt and impacted are in
our prayers and thoughts. You will never have to walk alone.
As investigators continue to put together what led to this horrific act, the
city, still absorbing the combination of celebration and sadness, now focuses
on healing.
