Tragedy
Strikes San Diego: Six Feared Dead in Private Jet Crash
All six people on
board are believed dead when a private jet crashed into the Murphy Canyon
neighborhood of San Diego, California, early Thursday morning. Around four in
the morning, the 1985 Cessna 550 Citation crashed into a residential house
after colliding with power lines in heavy fog while trying to land at
Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.
Victims
Identified
Daniel Williams,
the former drummer for the band The Devil Who Wore Prada, and Dave Shapiro,
co-founder of Sound Talent Group, were among the dead. An excellent pilot,
Shapiro was well-known for his love of flying and often posted about his
experiences on social media. Williams, 39, had made a big impact on the music
business and was one of the initial members of his band. Although their
identities have not been made public, two additional Sound Talent Group
employees were on board.
Impact
on the Community
The Murphy Canyon
community, the largest housing area owned by the U.S. Navy, sustained
significant damage as a result of the collision. Jet fuel leaked across the
streets, igniting several cars, and the impact ignited the house it hit. More
than 100 people had to be evacuated, and at least ten homes were damaged. One
person was hurt while fleeing through a window, while eight others on the
ground were injured.
Investigation
Underway
The event is
being looked into by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). According to preliminary reports,
Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport's severe fog and broken weather instruments
made the plane's approach more difficult. The pilot tried to land at the original
location after diverting to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Before the
incident, no distress signal was sent.
Community
Response
Todd Gloria, the
mayor of San Diego, thanked those who responded for responding quickly and
offered prayers to the families of the deceased. The loss of Shapiro and
Williams has also been noticed by the music world, with both fans and artists
expressing sympathy. In a statement, Sound Talent Group extended
its sorrow and sympathy to everyone impacted by the event.
